Expert Tips:
- When baking with a batter in your air fryer also use a sheet of parchment paper in your air fryer basket before adding in your recipe ingredients.
- To help prevent foods from sticking in your air fryer, lightly coat the ingredients with some cooking spray, or a misting oil before or during cooking.
- If you notice your hushpuppy biscuits are not browning or becoming crispy try adding a spritz of olive oil.
- Make sure you do not over crowd your air fryer basket. if 6 biscuits are crowding bake only 4 at a time - you need to leave room for the air to circulate.
Recipe FAQ's:
Homemade air fryer hushpuppies bake in approximately 6 minutes. Air fry for 3 minutes then flip for an additional 3 minutes.
Yes you can use batter in an air fryer as long as it is a thicker batter and you use a sheet a parchment paper in your air fryer basket for the batter to sit on.
Typically Hush Puppies do not contain Fish or Seafood as an ingredient. But if you are a seafood lover you can absolutely level up your Hush Puppy recipe by adding some diced shrimp or crabmeat to your batter.
From what I have researched it appears a cook/chef back in the day, down South is said to have given the name hush puppy to this tasty Bon-Bon.
While she was frying a batch of catfish and croquettes, her puppy began to bark at her during the cooking process. I can attest to this as my 2 pups were right by my side waiting for a taste as well. To keep her furry friend quiet, she gave it a plateful of the croquettes and said, “hush puppy.” Since then the name stuck for these charming little dessert bon-bons.
Yes, this Easy Air Fryer Hushpuppies recipe is the perfect healthy dessert. Low in calories, fat and sugar so feel free to indulge.
Yes you can...and you need to for this simple hushpuppy recipe. Parchment paper is a relatively oven safe paper that’s used most commonly in baking. The paper is treated to make it non stick, plus it can also withstand certain oven temperatures too.
Parchment paper can be perfect in an air fryer when cooking with a sticky batter. Food products that might otherwise stick to your air fryer basket – e.g. chicken wings in a sticky sauce – won’t stick at all to the parchment paper.
Yes, be careful especially with the Ninja Foodi Air Fryer as this Air Fryer cooks very hot. Do not leave your Air Fryer's unattended while cooking and only use parchment paper in your Air Fryer for quick recipes - under 10 minutes.
Important Tip: After you are done baking in your Air Fryer make sure you remove the parchment paper and discard. Someone may use the air fryer next and not realize the paper is still in there and start cooking something else...this is a fire hazard...I know because I did it...luckily no harm just a little smoke but be careful.
I used 2 Air Fryer's for this Homemade Hushpuppy recipe. I used my Ninja Foodi Air Fryer and also my basic GoWise Amazon Air Fryer. Both Air Fryer's worked great.
The Ninja Foodi Air Fryer cooks hotter and quicker than my GoWise Amazon Air Fryer. Even though they are set at the same temperature they do cook differently.
If you have the Ninja Foodi you only need 6 minutes to bake the Hushpuppies.
If you are using a different brand Air Fryer you may have to add an additional 5-6 minutes of baking time to the recipe.
