Who Created the Famous NYC Chocolate Egg Cream?
In the early 20th century, the iconic New York City chocolate egg cream emerged as a beloved and refreshing concoction, tracing its roots back to the Eastern European Jewish immigrants who settled in the bustling streets of Brooklyn.
Legend has it that the creation of this delectable beverage can be attributed to Louis Auster, a New York soda jerk with a knack for blending flavors.
The key ingredients of a genuine New York chocolate egg cream include Fox's U-bet chocolate syrup, renowned for its rich and authentic cocoa flavor, and the essential foamy head that gives the drink its characteristic velvety texture.
The popularity of the chocolate egg cream skyrocketed, becoming a staple for New Yorkers seeking respite on hot summer evenings.
The concoction, often referred to as "chocolate et creme," was a testament to pure sweetness, capturing the hearts of locals who craved a good egg cream.
The Bronx egg cream, originating from Auster's soda fountain on the corner of 7th Street, became synonymous with the cultural fabric of the city.
Despite the challenges brought about by the Great Depression, the New York chocolate egg cream persevered as a symbol of comfort and familiarity, providing a momentary escape for those navigating the hardships of the era.
Today, the legacy of this classic beverage lives on, cherished as a timeless reminder of the city's flavorful history.

- Use quality Ingredients: Start with high-quality ingredients, including good chocolate syrup, whole milk, and seltzer water.
- Use Cane Sugar: Opt for cane sugar instead of corn syrup for a more natural and rich sweetness.
- Balanced Chocolate Syrup: Create a balanced chocolate syrup by combining cocoa powder, sugar, and a bit of water. This ensures a deep, chocolatey flavor.
- Proper Ratios: Maintain the classic egg cream ratio of one part chocolate syrup, two parts milk, and three parts seltzer. This ensures the perfect blend of flavors.
- Chilled Ingredients: Chill your milk and seltzer beforehand to enhance the refreshing quality of the egg cream.
- Mixing Technique: Master the art of mixing. Use a long spoon to stir the chocolate syrup into the milk gently. Avoid over-stirring to prevent a flat egg cream.

- In a Garden Setting: Enjoy your homemade chocolate egg cream in a garden setting for a delightful and relaxing experience. The fresh air complements the beverage perfectly.
- Experiment with Flavors: While traditional egg creams use chocolate syrup, don't be afraid to experiment with other flavors like vanilla or even a hint of root beer for a unique twist.
