Notes

  • Use Ripe, Firm Peaches: Choose peaches that are ripe but still firm to prevent them from becoming too mushy during baking. This ensures a perfect texture for the filling.
  • Peel or Leave Skin On: If you're pressed for time or prefer more fiber, you can leave the peach skins on. The skins soften during baking and add a bit of texture, though peeling the peaches creates a smoother filling.
  • Balance Sweetness: Adjust the sweetness based on the ripeness of your peaches. If the peaches are super sweet, reduce the sweetener in the filling to avoid an overly sugary dessert.
  • Add a Citrus Kick: A squeeze of lemon or orange juice adds a bright, refreshing contrast to the sweetness of the peaches and helps prevent browning.
  • Use Whole Grain Flour: For a healthier crisp, swap regular flour in the topping for whole grain flour or a mix of almond flour and coconut flour. This boosts fiber and adds a slightly nutty flavor.
  • Add Spices for Depth: Enhance the flavor of your crisp with warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger. These spices complement the peaches perfectly and add depth to the dessert.
  • Incorporate Healthy Fats: Use heart-healthy fats like coconut oil or a small amount of grass-fed butter in the topping. This keeps the dish moist without adding too much saturated fat.
  • Cool Completely Before Storing: Let the peach crisp cool to room temperature before covering or storing it to avoid excess moisture from condensation, which can make the topping soggy.
  • Refrigerate for Longer Freshness: Store the crisp in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. This helps preserve the freshness of the peaches and keeps the topping crunchy.
  • Reheat in the Oven: To maintain a crispy topping, reheat leftovers in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10-15 minutes. This will restore the crisp texture better than microwaving, which can make it soggy.
